The Summer Season Isn’t Just Hot—It’s Heavy

A personal reflection on why summer can feel like a sensory and emotional overload

Does summer ever feel like… a lot?

We wait all year for these long, golden days. The air is warm, the skies are open, and suddenly—so is our calendar. Plans pile up. Bodies feel tired. Moods spike. Everything seems to be happening now. And while it can be joyful and beautiful, it can also feel “full on”—almost too much.

Here’s a gentle unpacking of why that might be happening, and how to hold space for yourself in this bright, buzzing season.

1. Nature Is Dialed Up to 100

The sun rises early, sets late, and everything in between is louder, brighter, and more energised. That might sound ideal—but it’s also stimulating on the nervous system .

  • The heat tires our bodies.

  • Longer daylight can throw off sleep rhythms.

  • There’s just more sensory everything—noise, light, motion.

Our systems aren’t always built for this much fire energy, especially day after day.

2. Social Expectations Rise

Summer is packed with invitations, events, and the constant hum of “making the most of it.”

  • Travel. Weddings. Barbecues. Birthdays. Reunions.

  • Social media doesn’t help—every scroll can spark a little FOMO.

  • Even joyful things require energy: planning, packing, showing up.

What was meant to be fun starts to feel like pressure.

3. Routines Disappear

With school breaks, vacations, and spontaneous outings, structure tends to dissolve in summer. That can feel freeing—but also destabilising.

  • No rhythm to ground your days.

  • Eating at odd times, sleeping irregularly.

  • Goals or habits may fall to the wayside, leaving you feeling scattered or “off.”

4. Emotionally, It’s a Rollercoaster

Sunlight can boost serotonin and energise us—but when the pace gets relentless, exhaustion creeps in.

  • Overwhelm often masks as irritation or low mood.

  • There’s a hidden grief when summer doesn’t feel as magical as we hoped.

  • Our inner world might crave slowness in a season that demands speed.

So What Can We Do?

  • Build gentle pockets of rest: A morning stretch, a shady bench, a solo walk without your phone.

  • Say no sometimes: You don’t need to be everywhere to feel connected.

  • Honour your rhythms: Go to bed a little earlier, eat grounding healthy foods, find small rituals that anchor you.

  • Let joy be simple: Not every summer moment needs to be picture-perfect. Sometimes, stillness is the miracle.

Summer is the season of fire in many traditions—a time of high energy, passion, movement. But fire needs balance. Too much, and we burn out.

So if you’re feeling a little overcooked, you’re not alone. Let this be your permission slip to slow down, soften, and savor only what’s truly nourishing.
